How to Solve Multi-Step Equations

Hi everyone, my name is Miss G, and in today’s video, we are going to learn how to solve multi-step equations. My goal is to simplify these concepts for you and provide tips and tricks to make solving these equations easier. Below is a brief overview of the key concepts covered in the video.

Key Concepts

Solving multi-step equations involves a series of steps to isolate the variable. Here are the four key steps:

Step 1: Distribute

If the equation has parentheses, use the distributive property to remove them. This involves multiplying the number outside the parentheses by each term inside the parentheses.

Step 2: Combine Like Terms

Next, combine like terms on each side of the equal sign. Like terms are terms that contain the same variable raised to the same power.

Step 3: Use Inverse Operations

To move variables to one side of the equation and constants to the other side, use inverse operations. Typically, you will move variables to the left and constants to the right, but this is a preference for readability.

Step 4: Isolate the Variable

Finally, isolate the variable by using inverse operations to separate it from the number it is multiplied or divided by. This often involves dividing both sides of the equation by the coefficient of the variable.

Example Problems

In the video, I go through several example problems to demonstrate these steps in action:

Example 1:

Solving an equation without parentheses, combining like terms, and using inverse operations to isolate the variable.

Example 2:

Solving an equation with parentheses, using the distributive property, and then combining like terms and using inverse operations.

Example 3:

Solving a more complex equation involving all four steps: distributing, combining like terms, using inverse operations, and isolating the variable.

Conclusion

By following these steps and practicing with various examples, you’ll be able to solve multi-step equations with confidence. Always remember to stay organized and work from left to right, as this will help keep your work clear and systematic.
